It is a question that many of us have to ponder from time to time: does my book need a sequel? While there is no one size fits all answer, here are a few things to keep in mind before making that decision for yourself and you characters.
One of the first things you should consider is why are you considering a sequel? Is it because you’ve been planning it since you wrote that first word many edits ago? Is your whole idea based around having multiple books? Are you just sure that your title will be more appealing to readers if they know there is another one they can pick up after the first? Or is it just because you’ve become attached to your characters and staying a little longer in the world you’ve built is incredibly tempting?
These are all questions you should consider. For many, they’ve always seen their story as a long series and let’s face it, series are very popular these days. In some genres they are almost expected and as a self-published author on Amazon it certainly would not hurt you to have multiple titles out there for readers to find. Definitely think long and hard however before you write your sequel simply so you can relish the comfort of your first book’s world a little longer. Some authors find that it can make moving on to a new story that much harder. You know your characters so well it can be almost impossible to say goodbye.
Everyone will have an opinion on whether or not you should write a sequel, but in the end it is your decision to make. That is the beauty of self-publishing — there is no official deadline to get a sequel in by, you aren’t held to whether or not your book has sold to a publisher — it is all up to you. So ponder on it and make sure you’re making the right choice for you as a writer.
