It’s not a secret that one of the current driving forces in the self-publishing world is Amazon. You could argue that without Amazon and their direct publishing services, self-publishing would not be what it is today. They are a powerhouse, one of the quickest and easiest ways to get your book on the market. But for those new to the process it can be a little overwhelming. You have so many different things to think about when you ready a book for publishing with editing, layout, cover design. Our goal here at BookFuel is to make things a little more simple for you as an author. So here is a brief overview on how to sell your book on Amazon – the basics, what you need to know.
- Pick your poison. Amazon offers two ways to self-publish and then sell. CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing. CreateSpace is a great option for a brand-new author, providing an online community and free DIY tools. Your book will be ready to distribute to many retailers rather than just Amazon. CreateSpace also provides print on demand services if you would like your book to be available in print as well as ebook. Combine CreateSpace with our free LaunchPad program and you’ll be well on your way! Kindle Direct is the other option that Amazon recommends for both new and veteran authors. The biggest difference between the two is that Kindle Direct only distributes your book in Kindle format (mobi) on Amazon.com.
- Genre. Make sure that you have a clear idea of what genre your book falls under. When setting your book up for sale on Amazon, this will become one of your greatest marketing tools. Think of other authors who write similar books to yours. What readers are you wanting to attract? If you want the same readers that read Nicholas Sparks novels, you need to get their attention. By ensuring that your novel falls in the same category as Sparks, you will start showing up on lists of read-alike novels. Your books will be recommended to the readers you are hoping to attract, greatly increasing your chances of a sale.
- Set up your author page. If you’re going to sell on Amazon, one of the main things you need to do is set up your author page. Readers will be able to see everything you have for sale through Amazon. You can also display a short biography, photo, and links to your other social sites. There is no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of your Author Page and really develop it into something that can work for you. One of the worst things you could do is sign up for your Author Page and not fill it in. Leaving a sparse Author Page may actually hurt you – readers enjoy knowing a little bit about who you are.
Selling your book through Amazon does not have to be an overwhelming task. With LaunchPad guiding you and the DIY nature of CreateSpace and Kindle Direct, you can have your book published and on sale in no time at all.
